SMW Local 104 Apprentices Compete at Western States Contest
SMW Local 104 apprentices went head-to-head with peers from Arizona, California and Nevada at this year’s Western States Apprenticeship Contest, held May 28–29 at the Livermore JATC.
The annual competition gives apprentices a chance to put their skills, technical knowledge and craftsmanship on display — and this year’s event was bigger than ever, expanding for the first time to include Service and TAB (Testing, Adjusting and Balancing) apprentices alongside the traditional Sheet Metal categories to showcase the diverse disciplines of the trade.
In total, the contest brought together 17 Sheet Metal contestants, nine TAB apprentices and nine Service apprentices, all competing in disciplines designed to mirror real-world demands on the job.
Sheet Metal apprentices were challenged in four specialized categories — Architectural, Industrial, HVAC and Project Management — each testing different facets of technical know-how and problem-solving under pressure.
TAB apprentices participated in a five-station, hands-on competition designed to test their knowledge and proficiency in TAB measurements and procedures. Stations included fire and smoke damper inspections, duct pressure testing and other essential TAB skills, challenging apprentices to demonstrate the precision and technical expertise needed to ensure system performance, efficiency and safety.
Service apprentices demonstrated their skills in soldering, brazing and electrical wiring, with judges evaluating both craftsmanship and adherence to industry standards.
Beyond the hands-on events, all apprentices completed written exams covering codes, safety practices and technical knowledge. The Western States Apprenticeship Contest remains an important opportunity for apprentices to showcase their abilities, gain valuable experience and demonstrate the high level of training provided through union apprenticeship programs. It’s also a great reminder of what’s possible when apprentices, instructors and industry partners all commit to building the next generation of sheet metal professionals.
