From Code Changes to AI: Key Advisory Meeting Takeaways
Thank you to everyone who participated in our 2026 General Advisory Meeting! The meeting gave members an update on what’s happening at the local, state and national levels, along with important upcoming events, industry developments and opportunities to stay engaged.
Following an industry forecast that showed both signs of improvement and challenges in the residential market, Eli Howard of National SMACNA provided updates on upcoming manuals and potential code changes.
Brian Pyle shared a CAL SMACNA update and highlighted several upcoming events:
- Cal/OSHA Safety Seminar: September 17
- Day at the Capitol: February 9-10, 2027
- 61st CAL SMACNA Convention: April 21-25, 2027
- Half Moon Bay
Members also received updates on the trust, health and welfare and apprenticeship programs, as well as collective bargaining. Sean O’Donoghue highlighted an important change regarding timely payment requirements for mailed checks. Once the payment has been mailed, the timely payment requirement has been satisfied. Members should retain documentation showing the payment was mailed, and they will not be liable if the U.S. Postal Service loses the payment.
Sean also shared that six members have been nominated for the six open board seats. Under the new bylaws, six board seats will be open each year at the March General Meeting, with nominations closing at the Advisory Meeting. Nominations are also open for the Lonnie Michael Award, which will be presented at the Annual Dinner. Please email Sean with nominations for individuals you feel are deserving of the award.
Jake Olsen of Stratus joined us to present an overview the company’s MEP operating system and its approach to AI transformation. He shared how investing in an enterprise license for an AI platform can support day-to-day tasks, including website development, sales, reporting and research related to customers and competitors.
